Boatmen Sunk in the Creek – Fareham Town 2-0 Sholing

By Joseph Brown

Fareham Town succesfully progressed to the semi finals of the Russell Cotes Cup with a solid and professional 2-0 home victory against near neighbours Sholing.

Town winger Matt Simm had our first effort on goal on 7 minutes, putting in a decent strike at goal but it was blocked by the Sholing defence.

For the majority of the half it was penalty area to penalty area before the defences took control, although Hamilton was unlucky not to get a touch to a low cross, Whilst at the other end Harding made a fine save from Mason. Ethan Jones then hit a low shot just outside the box which the ball was hit straight into the hands of Sholing keeper Gosney.

Then right on 45 minutes Fareham took the lead when an excellent attacking Town move occurred when Simm played an excellent cross and the ball reached Town centre back Robbie Pittman who was upfield and he curled a beauty of a shot from long range and the ball flew into the top right corner for his first goal for the club since April 2014 to put Fareham a goal to the good at half time.

Town had an early scare when a cross came to Mason whose volley hit the top of the bar, but on 56 minutes Town wrapped up the game when captain Josh Holmes doubled the Creeksiders advantage being on the end of a swift move which saw the ball moved across the full width of the pitch from Tattersall to Simm back to Holmes who, with a sweetly struck literally passed the ball into the low left corner of the goal giving Gosney no chance putting Fareham two nil up.

On 75 minutes Hayato 'Yoda' Yokota tried to score his first goal for Fareham when he struck a effort just outside the box but the ball went straight into the hands of Gosney and to deny a third goal for the Creeksiders.

Sholing huffed and puffed but Town comfortably held out, and with Simm, Hamilton, Tattersall and his replacement Sweeney all making life uncomfortable for the vistors defenders, but the final chance just wasn’t there.
